Museumplein
The Museumplein (; ) is a public space in the Museumkwartier (Amsterdam), Museumkwartier neighbourhood of the Amsterdam-Zuid stadsdeel, borough in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Located at the Museumplein are three major museums – the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum – and the concert hall Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Concertgebouw. The area was originally a wax candle factory and marshy meadows. Construction began following the completion of the Rijksmuseum in 1885, with a street plan based on the design of Pierre Cuypers, the museum's celebrated architect. The area was the location of the Internationale Koloniale en Uitvoerhandel Tentoonstelling, International Colonial and Export Exhibition in 1883. Wassily Kandinsky
Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky ( – 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as one of the pioneers of abstract art, abstraction in western art. Born in Moscow, he spent his childhood in Odessa, where he graduated from Grekov Odesa Art School, Odessa Art School. He enrolled at the University of Moscow, studying law and economics. Successful in his profession, he was offered a professorship (chair of Roman Law) at the University of Tartu, University of Dorpat (today Tartu, Estonia). Kandinsky began painting studies (life-drawing, sketching and anatomy) at the age of 30. Willem Sandberg
Jonkheer Willem Jacob Henri Berend Sandberg (24 October 1897 – 8 April 1984) was a Dutch typographer, museum curator, and member of the Dutch resistance during World War II. Early life and career Sandberg was born in Amersfoort in 1897 and studied art in Amsterdam. He became a follower of the Mazdaznan movement. As a young man he traveled, serving as an apprentice to a printer in Herrliberg, Switzerland. In 1927, he visited Vienna, where he studied Otto Neurath's Isotype system at the Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum. At this time, he also visited the Dessau Bauhaus and met Naum Gabo, a pioneer of kinetic art. Returning to Amsterdam, Sandberg started work as a graphic designer, utilizing his printing skills and Neurath's Isotype system. Sophia Adriana De Bruyn
Sophia Adriana de Bruijn or Sophia Adriana Lopez Suasso-de Bruyn (1816 – 1890) was a Dutch museum founder in Amsterdam. Sophia was born in Amsterdam as the daughter of a well-to-do Catholic family and enjoyed travelling and collecting antiquities, paintings, jewelry and curiosities. She married in 1860 relatively late in life in England with the Dutch nobleman jonkheer Augustus Pieter Lopez Suasso (1804-1877). Her husband was a member of the Portuguese-Jewish community in Amsterdam and he converted to Catholicism to marry her. Without children, the couple spent much of their time travelling and Sophia was able to continue her collecting. She specialized in miniature silver and kept this in large cabinets made to order in her home, which she opened to friends and relatives. Gilbert Prousch, sometimes referred to as Gilbert Proesch (born 17 September 1943), and George Passmore (born 8 January 1942) are artists who work together as the collaborative art duo Gilbert & George. Marlene Dumas (born 3 August 1953) is a South African artist and painter based in the Netherlands. Early life and education Dumas was born in 1953 in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Kuils River in the Western Cape, where her father had a vineyard. Dumas witnessed the system of apartheid during her childhood. Dumas studied art at the University of Cape Town from 1972 to 1975, and then at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem, which is now located in Amsterdam. Karel Appel
Christiaan Karel Appel (; 25 April 1921 – 3 May 2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet. He started painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s. He was one of the founders of the avant-garde movement CoBrA in 1948. He was also an avid sculptor and has had works featured in MoMA and other museums worldwide. Jackson Pollock
Paul Jackson Pollock (; January 28, 1912August 11, 1956) was an American painter. A major figure in the abstract expressionist movement, Pollock was widely noticed for his "Drip painting, drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was called all-over painting and action painting, since he covered the entire canvas and used the force of his whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dancing style. This extreme form of abstraction divided critics: some praised the immediacy of the creation, while others derided the random effects.
